What it takes to set up a new school

Setting up a new school is a big undertaking. It takes careful planning, thoughtful decisions, expert advice and real commitment. These are the questions every founding team needs to work through before opening.

Philosophy and vision

  • What are your core values and beliefs about education? Defining them is the first step towards your school's mission.
  • What vision captures your school's unique approach to teaching and learning?
  • Remember that your vision is a public statement. It tells your community what your school is for and where it is heading.

Pedagogy

  • What approach to teaching will you take, and how do you believe children learn best?
  • Make your pedagogy a central part of your mission. It is how you will achieve your vision.

Curriculum design

  • Which curriculum best fits your educational philosophy? Whatever you choose needs to be balanced and holistic.
  • Will it meet, or exceed, the standards you expect?

Assessment and evaluation

  • How will you assess students and track their progress?
  • How will you regularly evaluate teaching practice and the curriculum to keep standards high?

Legal and regulatory compliance

  • Does your school comply with national regulations for starting and operating an educational facility?
  • Which licences, permits and accreditations do you need to establish legitimacy and credibility?

Facilities and infrastructure

  • Will you be one-form or two-form entry? Libraries, canteens and other shared spaces are quickly outgrown.
  • What facilities and design will create a learning environment that reflects your educational approach?

Staffing

  • You will be competing for staff with established schools. What will make yours attractive?
  • How will you make sure the teachers you hire share your school's vision and values?
  • Which support staff will you need for the school to run smoothly?

Financial planning and budgeting

  • What needs to go into a detailed budget covering set-up costs, ongoing running costs and contingencies?

Admissions and enrolment

  • New parents will judge you on how easy and professional your admissions process feels. How will you make it as smooth as possible?
  • What will your fees include? Think tuition, lunches, learning resources, trips and so on.
  • Will you offer scholarships, and if so, what kind?

Technology

  • How will technology be woven into the curriculum?
  • What do you need for an IT infrastructure that is both appropriate and cyber-safe?

Marketing and communication

  • What will your brand identity and marketing strategy look like, to attract students and stakeholders?
  • What systems will keep parents, students and staff well informed?

Continuous improvement

  • How will you build a culture of continuous improvement from the very beginning?

Setting up a new school takes commitment, passion and dedication. It also takes the judgement to know when to ask for expert help. Starting a school is very much a team effort, and the best teams draw on each person for the particular skills and experience they bring to the table.
